Why Mom Workouts Look Different (And Why That’s Actually the Point)

fitness

Motherhood changes everything, including how workouts look.

Before kids, a workout might mean headphones in, full focus, and a perfectly structured routine. After kids? It might look like pausing mid-set, handing out snacks, or holding a baby while trying to finish the last few reps.

And honestly, that’s okay.

Recently, I attended a Pilates class hosted by Somer at Core & Cradle in Sarasota, and it was one of those moments that perfectly captured what movement looks like for moms.

Instead of quiet concentration and perfectly timed reps, the room was full of babies, laughter, interruptions, and moms who simply understood.

And that’s what made it so refreshing.

The Reality of Working Out as a Mom

One of the best things Somer said during class was this:

Some days are 80% workout and 20% parenting.

Other days are 20% workout and 80% mom-ing.

Both count.

That mindset shift is huge for moms navigating postpartum recovery, busy schedules, and the constant unpredictability of life with kids.

Because the truth is, movement after motherhood rarely looks perfect.

But it still matters.

Why Postpartum Fitness Needs to Be Flexible

Many traditional fitness spaces aren’t designed with moms in mind. They assume:

  • You have uninterrupted time

  • You can focus fully on the workout

  • You don’t have a baby in tow

But postpartum life doesn’t operate like that.

Mom-friendly workouts allow for:

  • Feeding breaks

  • Crying babies

  • Diaper changes

  • Pausing when needed

  • Showing up exactly as you are

And when a room full of moms shares that understanding, something really powerful happens.

No one is judging.

Everyone gets it.

The Power of Community in Motherhood

Walking into a space where moms support each other instead of expecting perfection changes the experience completely.

There’s relief in realizing:

  • You don’t have to “do it all perfectly”

  • Everyone else is navigating the same chaos

  • Movement can still be joyful, even if it’s messy

That kind of environment makes it easier to show up consistently, which is what actually builds strength and confidence postpartum.

Pilates for Moms in Sarasota

If you’re in Sarasota and looking for a welcoming, mom-friendly fitness environment, Somer’s classes at Core & Cradle Pilates are worth checking out.

Held at the beautiful Aleur Sarasota, the classes are designed with motherhood in mind, allowing moms to move their bodies while still showing up fully for their kids.

Because fitness doesn’t have to be all or nothing.

Sometimes it’s 80% workout.

Sometimes it’s 80% parenting.

Either way, you’re still showing up for yourself.

And that counts.
