Car Cleaning for Moms: My 20-Minute Mood Makeover
Sometimes self care as a mom looks less like a spa day and more like finally cleaning out the car you spend half your life driving. A quick car cleanout can make school drop-offs, errands, practices, and everyday mom life feel a little less chaotic without requiring an entire day of organizing.
Welcome to Mood Makeover 💅🏼, my new series about the little things I’m doing to make my life feel better.
Not completely overhaul my life.
Not become an entirely different, magically organized person.
Just fix the little things that have been quietly driving me crazy.
And first up? My car. 🚗🫧
Because I spend WAY too much time in this thing to hate being in it.
Why can cleaning your car make you feel better?
Cleaning your car removes one small source of everyday chaos, giving you a cleaner, calmer space for the hours you already spend driving.
I have four kids. My car is never going to look like no one actually lives in it.
There will be snacks.
There will be random things shoved into places where random things absolutely do not belong.
There will probably be something on the floor five minutes after I clean it.
I accept this. 😂
But there’s a difference between a car that looks like kids ride in it and a car that makes me annoyed every single time I open the door.
Mine had officially crossed that line.
So instead of continuing to look at it and think, ugh, I need to clean this, I did it.
That’s really the whole idea behind Mood Makeover.
What is a Mood Makeover?
A Mood Makeover is one small task, reset, or life upgrade that takes something from quietly bothering you to finally feeling better.
Self care gets packaged as something we need to add to our lives.
Book the massage. Buy the skincare. Take the bath. Start the morning routine.
Love all of those things.
But sometimes I don’t need another thing on my schedule.
I need to do the thing that has been taking up space in my brain for three weeks.
Clean the car.
Organize the drawer.
Make the appointment.
Return the pile of packages.
Put away the laundry that has basically become a piece of bedroom furniture.
It doesn't have to be glamorous to change your mood.
How do you clean out a messy mom car?
Start with trash, remove everything that belongs elsewhere, wipe down the main surfaces, and give everyday items a designated place.
I was NOT trying to turn this into an entire Saturday project.
The goal was to make my car feel good to get into again.
Here’s my realistic mom-car reset:
- Get all the trash out. Every wrapper, receipt, straw wrapper and unidentified scrap from the kids comes OUT.
- Remove everything that belongs in the house. Shoes. Clothes. Cups. Toys. The random thing I meant to bring inside four days ago.
- Wipe down the surfaces I actually see and touch. Cupholders, console, dashboard, doors. Basically, anywhere the kids have managed to leave evidence of their existence. 😅
- Clean the floors and seats. Goodbye, crushed snack graveyard.
- Give the things that stay in the car a home. This is the part that helps keep it from immediately becoming a disaster again.
And one of my favorite additions is a car trash bag from Crae Home.
Because apparently having an actual place for trash works better than hoping everyone suddenly stops creating trash. Who knew?
How do you keep a mom car clean with kids?
Make cleanup easier than making the mess: keep a trash bag in the car, remove house items regularly, and do small resets before clutter piles up.
I am not creating a seven-step nightly car-cleaning routine.
I know myself. 😂
I just want to make it easier to keep the car at a level where getting inside doesn’t immediately annoy me.
A designated trash bag is staying.
When I’m getting out of the car, I can grab the cups or random things that need to go inside.
And every once in a while, I can do another quick reset instead of waiting until the car reaches the point of no return.
The goal isn’t a perfect car. It’s a car I don’t hate being in.
Big difference.
Is cleaning a form of self care?
Cleaning can be a practical form of self care when removing clutter or finishing an overdue task makes your everyday environment feel better.
I think this is the part of self care we don’t talk about enough.
Sometimes taking care of yourself means making your actual day easier.
As a mom, I’m in my car ALL. THE. TIME.
School drop-off. Pick-up. Errands. Activities. Appointments. Running back home because someone forgot something.
So cleaning my car wasn't really about having a clean car.
It was about making a space I use every single day feel better.
And I think there are probably a bunch of these tiny things in our lives.
They aren't huge problems. Nothing terrible happens if we don't deal with them today.
They just quietly irritate us over and over and over again.
Those are my Mood Makeovers.
What’s one small thing you could change today?
Pick one thing you interact with almost every day that has been bothering you, and spend a few minutes making that one thing feel better.
Maybe your Mood Makeover is your car.
Maybe it’s the junk drawer you have to fight every time you need scissors.
Maybe it’s finally organizing the bathroom counter.
Maybe it’s cleaning out your bag.
Maybe it has nothing to do with cleaning at all.
I’m going to keep sharing mine because I want this series to be about realistic ways to feel a little better in the middle of actual mom life.
No complete life overhaul required.
Just one Mood Makeover at a time. ✨

FAQ: Cleaning and Organizing Your Car as a Mom
How often should you clean out your car with kids?
There’s no perfect schedule. Small, regular trash and clutter resets can make a full car cleanout much easier when you have kids.
What should moms keep in their car?
Keep the things your family regularly needs, but give them designated places so useful items don’t turn into another layer of clutter.
How can I clean my car when I don’t have much time?
Start with trash and items that belong inside your house. Even a short reset can make your car feel noticeably cleaner without detailing the entire thing.
How do you motivate yourself to clean a messy car?
Focus on how you want the car to feel the next time you get inside rather than trying to make it perfectly organized. A smaller goal makes it much easier to start.
One Mood Makeover at a Time
My car is going to get messy again.
Obviously. I have four kids. 😂
But right now? It feels SO much better.
And that was the whole point.
What’s the little thing quietly driving you crazy right now?
Maybe that’s your next Mood Makeover. 💅🏼
